What point is “too much?”

Let’s face it, when it comes to church production, one large factor is video. It’s a “way of saying it” without having to actually say it. They are a great source of information as well as a wonderful transition piece from one segment to another. But what’s the limit? We have been using video pretty heavily…to the point of overkill. It became awkward. Why were we showing a video for the same thing our pastor just announced? Now I’m not saying to cut all video, because as I previously stated video has it’s own rhyme and reason. When we use it too much, it becomes noise. We were to the point of having around five videos in our weekend experience. THAT’S OVERKILL! By the third video, practically everyone has checked out. And besides, in church production your goal should be to simplify the experience, not complicate and muddy it up. I firmly believe that God has brought the people there, and I am going to do everything I can to not waste their time.

Think of it like this, you go to the theatre to watch a movie. You’re sitting with your wife, and there it is…the previews. You have to go through 20 minutes of previews just to get to the reason you are there. Why has church become like this? Get them to the message!

Like I said before, videos are a great tool and we will never cease to use them, but only when necessary and appropriate.
